Background / the gathering…

It’s nearly twenty-five years since the Maxis (Music Alternative & Cross-disciplinary Approaches in Sound) events ended and now we’re hosting another event. Our aim is to bring together an international and diverse ensemble of artists, academics and animateurs for an inquiry and celebration of sound and related and we’d welcome your application

Different people(s) and diverse media - from potentiometers to puppets to poetry to paint to punk to aural phenomena ++

This event will take place over three consecutive days (four nights) at the Well Road Centre, a victorian lodge located in Moffat, a small town in the Scottish Borders, UK.

Cost

The required contribution from participants is £250 per person. This will include 4 x nights self-catered accommodation (please bring your own food and toiletries, a bed sheet, duvet cover and pillow case or a sleeping bag) and exclusive use of the whole house, including the great hall, kitchen, work and chill-out spaces and garden. See below for more details on the accomodation.

Limited technical support will be provided, a slot(s) in the programme and a hard copy of the published ISBN conference proceedings as appropriate.

This is a non-profit, peer-to-peer project, where the participants become the players! Our aim is to share, nurture and inform creative practice, providing an opportunity for personal development; underlying, the desire to demonstrate intelligence-in-action through discourse, critical reflection and peer review.

Submissions

Please let us know your interest as soon as possible by sending written abstracts (200 words max.) and / or a project outline to include technical requirements, a title and description of your paper or proposed performance, presentation, installation details etc.

Applications will close on Yule, 21st December 2026. Early submissions are welcome so we can start the event programming and resourcing in good time. If your submission is selected following review, you will then be contacted with the booking link.

All accepted papers and written copy etc. will be required to be completed for print and publication by Beltane, 1st May 2027. Details of layout and formats to be confirmed later.

LOCATION

The Well Road Centre is a large victorian residence set in its own grounds within the lovely town of Moffat. The house has shared rooms and is self-catering (please bring your own food and toiletries, a bed sheet, duvet cover and pillow case or a sleeping bag). It is situated in a quiet area yet is only a stroll from the shops and amenities of the town. The house also has a large communal hall. See photos below.

The Well Road Centre is accessible by bus from Glasgow Buchanan bus station. Take the X74 directly to the centre of Moffat and the house is roughly a 9 minute walk from there.
